USD coach Lamont Smith resigns after avoiding domestic violence charges
Lamont Smith has resigned as head coach of the University of San Diego Toreros men’s basketball team, the school announced Wednesday night.
Smith’s resignation comes a day after it was announced that he would not face charges related to his domestic violence arrest a week earlier.
Smith was placed on administrative leave by USD on Feb. 26, a day after he was arrested at the airport in Oakland on suspicion of domestic violence, assault with force likely to commit great bodily injury and false imprisonment. Police in San Francisco had received a call about a disturbance at a hotel. A woman with whom police spoke said she had been assaulted. She also appeared to have injuries, police said.
The woman said she was in a relationship with Smith even though he is married.
Smith, 42, was in his third season as USD’s head coach after playing for the school from 1995-1999.
