Ex-New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has weighed in on his former team cutting ties with quarterback Daniel Jones.

The Giants on Friday granted Jones his release after the QB requested it from Giants president John Mara. With Jones joining Barkley on the list of recently departed Giants, the team has committed to moving toward a new era.

Barkley spoke to reporters Friday after news broke that Jones was being released. The Philadelphia Eagles running back said that his friendship with Jones has remained intact since his move to Philly, which has been a terrific situation for Barkley thus far. Barkley said that he’s hoping Jones can find a similar restart elsewhere.

“It sucks to see how it all went down,” said Barkley. “I’ve got nothing but great things to say about him. It didn’t work for me over there, and I’m doing well over here. Hopefully, he can find the same kinda fresh start and success.”

Jones and Barkley had been the two most recognizable figures on the Giants before Barkley left last offseason. The two both combined for their best year of football in 2022, when the Giants finished 9-7 and ended its lengthy playoff drought.

After signing a massive contract after the 2022 season, Jones has taken a major step back since. Last season, Jones only threw for 909 yards with 2 touchdowns and 6 interceptions across 6 games in an injury-riddled 2023 campaign.

Before being released this season, Jones threw for 2,070 yards with 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions on the 2-8 Giants. While it remains unclear which teams are eyeing Jones, there have already been rumors about where he could end up.
