Megan Lochte reportedly apologizes for racist video, says it was a skit

Ryan Lochte has received plenty of notoriety since returning to America from the London Olympics, but it’s his sister, Megan, who is receiving the attention this week.

Megan Lochte came under fire on Friday when a 2008 video featuring her making several racist remarks went viral. The video, which was first posted by Jezebel (warning: video contains explicit language), is from Lochte’s 2008 appearance on a Maryland late-night comedy talk show called “Closing Time,” hosted by Baltimore-based comedian Mickey Cucchiella. The show took place shortly after Lochte returned from watching her brother compete at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

“Let’s talk about China. How long were you there?” the host asks “field correspondent” Lochte.

“We were there for a little bit over a week. China was ch—ed out,” she says to much laughter. “Like, it was totally Chinese. Everything.”

“The nerve of those people to be …” Cucchiella began, before being interrupted by Lochte.

“Ch—s everywhere,” Lochte continued.

By that point, Lochte had used the racial slur three times, and Cucchiella was looking uncomfortable.

“Let’s say ‘Chinese’ (to describe them), Megan,” he said. “Let’s not say that word.”

“Ch—?” she asked. “But, like, it fits them, because they’re like ch—s,” she said, adding a high-pitched emphasis on the slur. “And you know how they stereotypically want to take pictures? They take pictures of everything. Like I would be jumping up and down, and they would be like ‘Oh my god, American jumping up and down!’”

“Really? So they’re a little snap-happy?” Cucchiella asks.

“Ch— ch—” Lochte said, mimicking the sound a camera would make taking a picture. “That’s where it comes from, I think. Right? Is that where it comes from?”

“I don’t know where it comes from,” Chucchiella responds.

The conversation turns into one about the driving ability of the Chinese. Lochte says the Chinese drive like ninjas, but the host corrects her and reminds her that ninjas are part of the Japanese culture.

“They’re whatever we want — they’re Asian,” she says.

The skit doesn’t end until Lochte gets in a blast on the Great Wall of China.

“The Great Wall is misnamed. [It should be called] like, f***ing huge OCD fence,” she says.

Jezebel points out the irony that Megan’s Facebook page states that she “studied multicultural marketing at University of Maryland, Baltimore County.” You wouldn’t expect someone with that educational background to speak in such blatantly racist terms, but Lochte is defending herself against the mounting criticism.

Lochte released a statement on Saturday in response to the video and racist accusations. She stressed that the video has been taken out of context.

“This was not a real interview, and it in no way reflects my true feelings or persona whatsoever,” Lochte told Us Weekly in a statement. “The intent was to make fun of the ignorance of people who actually do not have an understanding of other cultures and speak in racist ways.

“The skit and my character were supposed to be making fun of ignorance,” she says.

“I do see how it was highly offensive to the viewer, but as seen by today’s widespread outrage, it clearly did increase awareness of the ignorance of those who are racist.

“While the intent of the script was to shed light on cultural ignorance,” Lochte says, “I realize that in application it did offend people, and for that I apologize.”

I’m guessing most people see the video as offensive rather than a comedic attempt to raise “awareness” about cultural ignorance. While racial stereotypes are considered a genre of comedy and is generally excused in some settings, using frequent slurs — regardless of setting — is not advised.

It’s somewhat unfair that Ryan is associated with this even though he had nothing to do with the video. Megan should have realized after Beijing that her brother was famous and that anything she did could be scrutinized on a mass level.

why does she have to apologize? racist? sure but for an action that happened 4 years ago? she may be the same person or she may have turned a new leaf. are you the same person you were in high school, the same person you were in college? are you ready to apologize for your back in the day actions?

  • SherylSimpson

ok i can see where this could be an attempt at comedy, but, sadly, it failed.

What a moron. This is why Americans are hated . Ms ” I look like man with boobs” …. you think everyone in the whole world do the same things as we do in the U.S. ?? If you go to …Europe for instance, and they do things different as we do in the U.S. …you’ll make fun of it? Because it’s wrong ??  You Ms ” I look like man with boobs” is a total moron . You are the type who brings up children wrong and continue to teach hate and wrong values. You need to have your tubes tied so you don’t bring any children into this world.

So some loser wants some attention so they dig up old videos of someone trying to be funny and lable her as racist. What a joke!

  • Ino Enriquez

So she really expects us to believe this lie about the skit? She thinks it’s a plausible story that she’s not an ignorant racist, she’s actually a rogue comedienne struggling against social injustice? What a load of bullshit. She’s really just insulting our intelligence now, probably thinks we’re as stupid as her family. By the way, no other interviews from the show archives are skits.

Having spent many years in Europe, I can tell you that Europeans are very open in their dislike of the nations around them (as well as Americans, Turks, and Greeks).
The Brits denigrate French and German people, the Germans talk about how stupid and lazy the French and Spanish are, the French hate everyone… In Asia, the Japanese do not like Koreans and the Chinese and Koreans hate the Japanese with a passion (anyone paying attention to the anti-Japanese marches held all over China lately?).

Even inside China, the Chinese do not see themselves as one big noun called Chinese but rather break themselves down into ever smaller sub-groups and discriminate among them.

With all this going on, why is this woman being treated like she’s a closet Nazi?  And why is it wrong to say “Chink” but okay to write dumb (bigotry against the mentally challenged) white (racist ) trashy (bigotry against the economically challenged) bitch (misogyny)?

  • villareno

It’s not, it’s all wrong. Just because other nations do it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take a stance together when somebody so publicly resorts to such depths of ignorance.

You make a very childish point using ‘big’ words. Basically you’re saying “well, they did it too, so we should let it slide”. A pathetic point-of-view normally perpetuated by those who never bother to make a stand on any issue.

  • villareno

    You’re no better than her.

  • villareno

I think you just fell victim to your own point. Idiot.

  • thanatos_azrael

OMG too funny, people are to thin skinned, the host’s story about the cop showed more racism than this girls comments. She mightnot be comedean material but she can tell a funny story.

    Megan, sorry too late.
Thanks for enlightening everyone on a most likely a good reflection of
what your family is like and what it tolerates. It doesn’t matter what culture
we are from, our parents and immediate family do have a great deal of influence
on all of us during our upbringing.
I think Ryan coming from the same nest most likely has some similarities
of you regarding Chinese or other races. Of course I have no proof that Ryan is
like so, but I would have to believe that this type of talk has come up
casually in family get togethers and conversation. You say that it was only a
skit or planned interview, which makes it worse than off the cuff comments
because you knew what the material was going to be before they were uttered.  The incident was very juvenile, it
shows a great deal of your background and your level of education and most
likely your family’s likewise. I’m not saying your brother will loose sleep not
doing endorsements in China or Asia, but your little 15 minutes only did damage
to him in some sort, even here in the United States.  I still remember the USA gold medalist in archery sometime
    back, making comments about blacks.
    Already forgot his name…

you’re as much of a moron than her if you thought it was funny…

  • BangersMash

This is why the rest of the world looks upon Americans as ignorant, backward and extremely racist people. I am not trying to be offensive, I am merely giving it to you straight up. Even the US Government realizes  that there IS a problem to the American perception so much so that they came out with a course for all their foreign mission staff titled, “why americans are hated world over’. I know some other ignorant fool will reply to this post by blurting the only language common in the States – racial profanities. And believe me when I say, it certainly is not envy!! We all know how beholden America is to China right now (where did you think ALL that credit money the USA has been spending all these YEARS was coming from? Megan Lochte’s little world?) How much DISGRACE could you bring in one sitting to your whole family, to your brother, whose back that his nonentity of a sister  has been riding, to your community and to your country? SHAME ON YOU MEGAN LOTCHE.. Go on, continue to prove to the world that yes, Americans are a bunch of ignorant fools. And my advice to Ryan, STOP letting her ride on your coat tails. And to insult our intelligence by saying it was all done to expose OTHER PEOPLE’s racist opinions just takes the biscuit. It certainly doesn’t paint a pretty picture of the LOTCHE FAMILY, birds of the same feather and all……………………………………Word to sponsors, perhaps Ryan Lotche et al might not be good for international adverts.

Well said Mar R. Well said. It exposes to the world the Lochte family and the upbringing they gave their children.

  • BangersMash

Written like a true A-typical ignorant imbecile. Jennifer Smith, I have just one question for you. So in YOUR opinion, was it alright for Megan Lochte to have made the comments she made?

  • http://twitter.com/ryansned66 Ryan Sned

Point being…what does this have to do with her brother?
