Cardinals rookie Damond Powell shot in face in drive-by shooting

Damond Powell

Arizona Cardinals rookie wide receiver Damond Powell was shot in the face in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, Friday and taken to the hospital, where is said to be recovering and thankfully dealing with non-life threatening injuries.

Powell, who grew up in Toledo and played college ball at Iowa, had been in his hometown for the month and was at his grandmother’s house when he was shot Friday. The Toledo Blade says three masked suspects in a gold car fired and hit Powell in the face. A house and car were also struck by bullets.

Powell was taken to the hospital to be treated. Neighbors were shocked by the shooting because they say there is never violence in the area and that Powell was not involved in any gang activity.

The Cardinals, who signed Powell as an undrafted free agent, sent this statement on the matter:

“We are aware that Damond Powell was the victim of a shooting last night in Toledo, where he remains hospitalized. We have been in communication with his family to offer whatever support and resources we can provide. We will continue to monitor and provide updates as appropriate.”

Powell was arrested in Iowa in February for driving without tail-lights or headlights and reportedly admitted to police that he had been drinking.
