Former All-Star pitcher for Brewers needs Tommy John surgery
One former All-Star pitcher is now facing an uphill battle to continue his MLB career.
Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reported on Friday that Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Wade Miley will need to undergo Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. Miley will reportedly rehab for the next 10-to-12 months and then decide whether to resume his career.
Miley did express confidence on Friday though that he would ultimately be able to return.
“I’ve always said I want to go out on my own [terms],” Miley said, per McCalvy. “I still feel like I’ve got more in the tank.”
Miley, now 37 years old, was an All-Star back in 2012 and has pitched 14 MLB seasons for eight different teams. He had a resurgence last season with the Brewers as well, going 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA over 25 starts.
But Miley had battled through shoulder and elbow issues in recent years and posted a 6.43 ERA in his first two starts this season before going on IL with left elbow inflammation. Miley has now been diagnosed with a torn UCL in the elbow and will have Tommy John in the hopes of returning for his age-38 season in 2025. For the Brewers, who are off to an excellent 16-8 start to the year, this is the latest unfortunate injury blow to one of their pitchers.
