The New York Jets showed up on Sunday looking to play spoiler against the New England Patriots, and they were almost successful. But like the first time they faced the Pats, the Jets lost by less than a field goal.
Those types of losses have been frequent for New York this season. A combination of poor play and worse luck has resulted in a 3-12 record, but some Jets players still feel they are on the best 3-12 team in NFL history.
“If you look at our season, besides two or three games, we’ve been in every game,” rookie safety Calvin Pryor said, via Phil Perry of CSNNE.com. “You can cut it and slice it how you want to. I think we’re — what are we, 3-12? — I think we’re the best 3-12 team in the history of football. No doubt about it.”
Safety Dawan Landry agreed.
“The record doesn’t dictate the team that we are,” Landry explained. “We played a lot of close games that could’ve gone either way. We could’ve easily had 10-11 wins. Easily. It just hasn’t been our year. We got one more game, we’re gonna try to finish it off on a high note.”
I wouldn’t say the Jets could have “easily” had 11 wins with Geno Smith and Michael Vick at quarterback, but they did lose seven games by one score. That said, you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken s***.
The Jets don’t appear to have given up on Rex Ryan, even when the coach looks like he’s about to cry during postgame press conferences. That should go a long way for Ryan’s future employment opportunities.
