[...] If you can remember, I’ve been pretty critical of Marty Schottenheimer over the last few months. Just this week, I wasn’t sympathetic about the Chargers’ firing of Marty. Previously, I was pretty incredulous that the Chargers lost at home in the playoffs to the Patriots. Now, I have come across some new information about the Chargers/Patriots game that let’s just say, tells us a little something about what was going on in Marty’s head the day of the loss. [...]

Marty is the modern day equivalent of George Allen and Chuck Knox, two very conservative coaches who had great regular season records but could never win the big one. Both of them had the personnel and the game plan to beat the teams they should beat: those with inferior personnel. However, come playoff time, when the talent level is reasonably equal, both of those guys, like Marty, floundered. Chuck knox could not beat Bud Grant's Minnesota Vikings, and George Allen could not beat the Packers or the Dolphins in the big one.

If the Charger goal is to have outstanding regular seasons and compete every year, Marty is the man. However, if their goal is to win the Super Bowl, then they need a coach who will think "outside the box" and make a difference in the tight playoff games.
