Mike McCoy still confident in Melvin Gordon despite fumbles

San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon has been struggling with fumbles lately, but head coach Mike McCoy still hasn’t lost confidence in him.

McCoy said on Monday that, while Gordon needs to do a better job of hanging onto the football, his ball security issues won’t affect his usage moving forward, per Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union Tribune.

Gordon lost his second fumble of the season against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, and it came at a very costly time in the third quarter of a one-score game that the Chargers would wind up losing to drop to 1-4 on the year. The former Wisconsin Badger was also plagued by the same problem in his rookie season in 2015, fumbling a total of six times, the third-highest among all running backs that year.

Regardless, the 23-year-old is still a highly-talented runner who has already found the end zone six times in the first five games of the season. San Diego doesn’t have much depth behind him either with Danny Woodhead out for the year with a torn ACL. But it remains to be seen just how much patience McCoy will have left if Gordon continues to cough up the pigskin.
