Robert Griffin III: I’d rather be compared to Aaron Rodgers than Cam Newton
Comparisons between Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III come naturally. Both are quarterbacks. Both are scramblers. Both won the Heisman Trophy in college. Like Newton, RG3 is off to an incredible start in his first NFL season. He has been lighting up the stat sheet with both his arm and legs — the same way Newton did a year ago. However, Griffin would rather be compared to someone with a better resume.
“I’d rather be compared to an Aaron Rodgers or a guy like that,” Griffin said Wednesday according to the Washington Times, “someone who has won Super Bowls.”
While I can see how someone would claim comparing Newton and RG3 is an issue of race (we just went over this with Newton and Warren Moon), comparing Griffin to Rodgers makes less sense than comparing him to Newton. If Griffin goes on to win a Super Bowl, then we can talk about comparing him to Super Bowl MVPs.
If you think race is the issue, perhaps it would be better to compare RG3 to Andrew Luck, who is another rookie that has enjoyed success as a starting quarterback in his first NFL season. I understand why Griffin aspires to be compared to the Rodgers’ and Mannings of the world, but that is something he must earn. It also makes sense that he wouldn’t want to be compared to someone who held up the team bus by sulking in the locker room or put on a dramatic production at a recent press conference.
