Tom Brady was furious with his wide receivers during the New England Patriots’ game against the New York Jets on Thursday night.
Brady is without Wes Welker, who was let go over the offseason and signed with the Denver Broncos. Welker’s replacement, Danny Amendola, is out with a groin injury. Tight end Aaron Hernandez is in jail and facing murder charges. Rob Gronkowski is recovering from back surgery. Zach Sudfeld has a quad injury. All this has left Brady frustrated with the patchwork group of receivers he’s throwing to.
Brady was especially peeved after the Patriots failed to convert a 3rd and 5 from the Jets 12 in the second quarter and had to settle for a field goal. Julian Edelman and Aaron Dobson ran nearby each other. Edelman broke in while Dobson turned out. Brady threw to the spot where both converged, resulting in an incompletion.
Brady was especially pissed when he went to the sidelines:
My guess is that Brady wanted either Edelman or Dobson to break off their route and sit in the spot where Brady threw the ball. The Patriots give their receivers multiple options on each route and leave it up to the player to decide where to go based on where the defense is. This type of strategy allows the offense to have maximum flexibility to make adjustments, but it requires the quarterback and receivers to be on the same page. When they’re not, mistakes like that happen, as they were all Thursday night.Google+
