Kennedy addresses calling Rory McIlroy ‘leprechaun’

Rory McIlroy’s participation in The Open Championship next week is in doubt after the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer suffered ligament damage in his ankle playing soccer over the weekend. While golf fans around the world would like to see McIlroy’s inclusion in the tournament, one employee of FOX Business Network doesn’t share the warmest regards for the 26-year-old.

Lisa Kennedy Montgomery, known by many as just Kennedy, is a co-host of FOX’s “Outnumbered.” On Monday, as heard in the above video, Kennedy called McIlroy a “leprechaun” before adding that she “can’t stand him.” During Tuesday’s show, Kennedy clarified her comments by saying:

“Yesterday at this time I used the word leprechaun to describe golfer Rory McIlroy. I love sports, I love golf, but I am not a fan of Rory’s. Mostly for the way he treated tennis great Caroline Wozniacki and discarded her like a piece of chewed gum when he broke her heart and broke off their engagement in a short phone conversation. That’s worse than breaking up on a Post-it. Now to be clear, neither Harris nor Jenna Lee used the term and I don’t want them to get the credit for it. I called Rory McIlroy a leprechaun and believe me I wanted to call him much worse. As you know, some of my best friends are leprechauns and they also have tremendous sense of humor. Thank you.”

Kennedy is certainly not the only one who wasn’t happy with the way the relationship between McIlroy and Wozniacki ended. However, when she voices her opinion on the matter, the audience is large. Add to it that she used a term seen as derogatory by some and it’s not surprising Kennedy addressed the remarks a day later.
