Rory McIlroy is almost certain to miss The Open Championship next week and likely be out longer than that after he suffered an injury while playing soccer with friends over the the weekend.
McIlroy, who is still the top-ranked golfer in the world, announced the injury on Facebook Monday morning.
“Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday,” he wrote. “Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started … Working hard to get back as soon as I can.”

That doesn’t sound good.
McIlroy did not play well in the first three rounds of the U.S. Open last month, but he turned it on in the final round and managed to pull off a top-10 finish. He also made one of the best birdie putts you will ever see.
Here’s hoping McIlroy has a speedy recovery and can play again this season.
