Donna Vekic at center of Stan Wawrinka-Thanasi Kokkinakis girlfriend issue

Donna Vekic is the woman at the center of the girlfriend issue between Stan Wawrinka and Thanasi Kokkinakis that Nick Kyrgios so crudely referenced during his match with the Swiss star on Wednesday night.

Kyrgios was getting upset during his second-round match with Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup in Montreal and muttered that Kokkinakis banged Stan’s girlfriend (video here). Stan did not hear what Kyrgios said, but TV cameras caught the remark, leading the media to begin buzzing about it and ask questions after the match.

“He (Wawrinka) was getting a bit lippy with me, kind of in the heat of the moment. I don’t know, I just said it,” Kyrgios explained after the match.

And that all brings us to the obvious questions about the matter, namely: who is Donna Vekic, and what is her relation to Wawrinka and Kokkinakis?

Vekic is a 19-year-old Croatian tennis player who was seen cheering on Wawrinka at Wimbledon. There were rumors that the two were dating back at the French Open in May. They also happen to share an agent, and they hung out together as early as 2014, which is when Vekic was tweeting about Stan pretty frequently:

Wawrinka moved pretty quickly, because it was only in April that he announced he was separating (for the second time) from wife Ilham, whom he married in 2009:

But Vekic and Kokkinakis have history. The two teens played mixed doubles together last year, and Kokkinakis even gave this noteworthy Twitter response to someone who asked two years ago if they were dating:

There’s obviously something that is or was going on between them, but for Kyrgios to say it when he did was just poor form. Wawrinka was already dealing with enough personal issues, and now his business is out there publicly when it really shouldn’t be.
