Alright, I’m not going to lie. The Derek Jeter flip play is one of his signature moments as a ballplayer, but I’ve always felt it’s overrated. Jeter was in the right place at the right time and helped the Yankees beat the Oakland A’s 1-0 in Game 3 of the 2001 ALDS, leading to an eventual Yankees comeback.
Was it a great play? Yeah it was. But I think any heads-up ballplayer would have been there and made it, too. Plus, if it weren’t slow as heck Jeremy Giambi on the bases, the A’s score that run.
Love Jeter, love that his head is always in the game, but this play was always overrated. Back in August, former Yankees manager Buck Showalter even said the team practiced that play. I rest my case.

Anyway, below is a cool infographic sharing some more details on the Jeter flip. Am I wrong that the play is overrated? Feel free to let me know in the comments.
