AJ McCarron’s mom showing support for Auburn’s Tre Mason

Tre-Mason-AuburnAlabama quarterback AJ McCarron told reporters last week that he will be rooting for Auburn in the BCS National Championship Game. We all understand the rivalry that exists between Alabama and Auburn, but McCarron still wants to see the crystal football trophy remain in in the SEC. McCarron’s mother Dee Dee feels the same way.

Over the weekend, Dee Dee tweeted her support of Auburn running back Tre Mason when she shared a photo of a shirt she said she has purchased and will be wearing on Monday, Jan. 6.

AJ also specifically mentioned Mason, who he became close with during Heisman Trophy weekend in New York City, when asked about his decision to root for the Tigers over Florida State.

“Getting to know his mom and his dad and him, they’re great people,” McCarron said, via AL.com. “Like I said before, I’ll definitely be rooting for him in the national championship game.”

Crimson Tide fans are probably cringing over AJ and Dee pulling for Mason and company, but there’s nothing wrong with respecting the competition. If Alabama can’t win another national championship, they might as well hope they lost to the best.

AJ McCarron: Nick Saban told me he’s not leaving Alabama

Nick SabanIf Nick Saban is planning on leaving Alabama to coach Texas, he lied to his starting quarterback. Either that, or AJ McCarron is lying to us. Either scenario is a genuine possibility.

McCarron was asked about Saban’s futur on Thursday during an appearance on ESPN’s “College Football Daily.” The senior took a shot at his coach’s age before revealing that Saban told him he is staying put.

“I messed with Coach, [saying] he’s getting too old to start up again somewhere else,” McCarron said. “He told me he’s not leaving. And I know Miss Terry [Saban's wife] well enough; she runs that house. And she’s not allowing Coach to leave either. I think he’ll be at the University of Alabama for a little while.”

As recently as Thursday morning, a report indicated that Saban is in the process of figuring out “what his staff would look like” if he chose to leave Bama to coach the Longhorns. There have also been reports about Alabama officials growing uneasy over Saban’s hesitance to sign a contract extension proposal, which has supposedly been on his desk since Friday. One second he’s leaving, the next he’s staying, and the next he’s undecided.

Of course, Saban is the type of guy that probably wouldn’t tell anyone — not even his starting quarterback that he has won multiple championships with — what his intentions are. And if he was planning to leave Alabama, he certainly wouldn’t want his players to know that before their upcoming BCS bowl game against Oklahoma.

Takeo Spikes holds up ‘Hey AJ, tell Katherine to quit calling me!’ sign

If you happened to be out of the country this weekend, you missed one of the greatest endings to a to a football game in the history of the sport. Auburn defeated Alabama in the Iron Bowl when defensive back Chris Davis returned a missed 57-yard field goal for a touchdown to break a 28-28 tie. This made Takeo Spikes and the rest of the Tigers alumni very happy.

On Saturday night, Spikes celebrated with thousands of others on Auburn’s campus. At one point, the former NFL linebacker was spotted holding a sign that read, “Hey AJ, tell Katherine to quit calling me!” That, as you know, is a reference to Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron and his lovely girlfriend Katherine Webb.

We’re guessing Spikes didn’t make the sign, but it’s still hilarious that he displayed it proudly. You’d expect McCarron to be irritated by it, but he should be pretty used to NFL players hitting on his girl by now.

AJ McCarron girlfriend Katherine Webb rooting for Alabama over Auburn

Katherine Webb, the beauty queen/model girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, announced prior to Saturday’s huge Iron Bowl game between the Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers that she will be rooting for Bama despite being an Auburn grad.

A few hours before the game, Webb tweeted “RTR,” which stands for “Roll Tide Roll.”

She then explained why she would be supporting boyfriend McCarron over Auburn:

Webb has been attending Bama’s games all season to support McCarron, and there were questions about whether she would attend the Iron Bowl. Despite attending and graduating from Auburn, Webb has never been to an Iron Bowl game. She admitted during the week that she will be nervous about the game, but not because of what might happen with the fans; she’s nervous about Alabama pursuing the national championship.

Nick Saban irritated by question about AJ McCarron on cover of SI (Video)

Nick-SabanAlabama head coach Nick Saban has not won three of the past four BCS National Championship Games by paying attention to distractions. Anything that is not directly related to football is a distraction, including AJ McCarron’s all-American smile on the latest cover of Sports Illustrated.

On Wednesday, a reporter made the mistake of asking Saban how he thinks McCarron “looks as a cover boy” and if Saban keeps copies of those types of magazines at home.

“First of all, you think I sit around all day looking at magazines or what?” Saban replied. “I don’t even know what you’re talking about. You ask a question every week that I don’t know anything about. You need to come here and walk around and follow me around for like a week.”

Those who cover the Alabama football team know that Saban always refuses to discuss stuff that is printed and said in the media — whether he is lying about having heard it or not.

NFL scouts are reportedly ‘split’ on AJ McCarron

AJ McCarronAJ McCarron is one of the more intriguing quarterback prospects that will be entering the 2014 NFL Draft. The hype surrounding the three-time national champion is not as great as that accompanying guys like Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel, but McCarron has plenty of the “intangibles” we always hear NFL teams talking about.

All McCarron seems to do is win football games and rarely turn the ball over. Despite that, NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah reported on Monday that there is some disagreement among NFL scouts over the type of pro McCarron could become.

“He doesn’t have a huge arm, but he makes up for it with excellent timing, touch and decision-making,” Jeremiah wrote. “Scouts around the NFL are split on McCarron, but he has compiled a very impressive college résumé.”

If the Tide win another title this season, it would be McCarron’s third as a starting quarterback and fourth since he enrolled at Alabama. That would be an incredible accomplishment. While he may not have as big an arm as guys like Bridgewater or the same type of play-making ability that Manziel has, McCarron has consistently shown that he can shine when the spotlight is at its brightest.

If anything, the genius that is Nick Saban could hurt McCarron’s draft stock. Some analysts barely have McCarron as a top-10 quarterback in next year’s draft. Those analysts — and many NFL scouts — likely feel that Saban could have the same success with a lot of quarterbacks and that McCarron may not have what it takes to carry an NFL team. That could make him a steal somewhere in the middle rounds.

Nick Saban jumps into AJ McCarron’s arms for hug after win (GIF)

nick-saban-aj-mccarronNick Saban broke out of his Robo-Saban mode for a second to actually celebrate Alabama’s 38-17 win over LSU on Saturday in Tuscaloosa.

Immediately after the game ended, Robo-Saban ran onto the field and jumped into the arms of senior quarterback A.J. McCarron for a huge hug.

McCarron called the contest with LSU a “huge game” and Bama’s “toughest game so far.” But after showing human emotion for a brief moment, Saban went back to his professional mode for his postgame interview with CBS. He continued to talk up McCarron, calling the senior the best quarterback in the country and urging fans and media to overlook statistics (presumably yards etc.) in favor of wins.
