Ted Wells report shows Jonathan Martin, unnamed Dolphins OL, team assistant were harassed

Jonathan Martin Richie Incognito

When Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito tweeted that the truth is going to “bury” teammate Jonathan Martin earlier this week, he must not have been referring to the Ted Wells report. The results of the independent investigation were released on Friday, with Wells and others concluding that Martin was indeed a victim of persistent workplace harassment.

If you have the time, the entire report is worth reading. Incognito is basically labeled the ring leader, though it was determined that offensive linemen Mike Pouncey and John Jerry also bullied Martin. Another Dolphins lineman, referred to as Player A, and a team assistant were also allegedly harassed on a regular basis.

The report includes a number of disturbing exchanges — both verbal and written — that Martin claims took place between him, Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey. The exchanges include but are not limited to the use of racial and homophobic slurs and incredibly disturbing remarks about Martin’s sister and mother.

Richie Incognito: Jonathan Martin told me he was considering suicide

Jonathan Martin Tony DungyRichie Incognito broke his silence in a huge way on Wednesday, blasting Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin on Twitter and warning him that the truth is going to “bury” him. He later claimed that Martin once told him he was thinking about taking his own life.

“FACT: Jonathan Martin told me he thought about taking his own life in MAY 2013 (because) he wasn’t playing well,” Incognito wrote. “Told me he felt worthless.”

A series of text messages that were exchanged between Incognito and Martin appeared to show that the two had a pretty typical relationship for two men. Incognito’s camp has also claimed that Martin used drugs and that he feared he was in danger of losing his spot on the team.

In an interview with Tony Dungy last month, Martin said he felt that he had been “singled out” and the way he was treated was not normal. Incognito seems intent on proving that Martin had some mental health issues that were not caused by the way the former Stanford star was treated in the locker room.

Incognito’s claim that Martin told him he was considering suicide is obviously very serious. Had anyone else on the team known that Martin was having those thoughts and done nothing about it, there would be a significant problem within the organization.

Richie Incognito to ‘best friend’ Jonathan Martin: The truth will bury you

Jonathan Martin Richie Incognito

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito decided on Wednesday that he was done keeping quiet about the situation with teammate Jonathan Martin. Incognito blasted Martin in a series of tweets and warned that the truth is going to “bury” him.

Incognito was referring to the racially-charged message that he allegedly left Martin, during which he supposedly threatened Martin.

Richie Incognito, others show support for Michael Sam

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito does not have a reputation for being a kindhearted person, thanks in large part to the ongoing saga involving Jonathan Martin. He could have kept quiet on Sunday night, but instead (perhaps trying to improve his public image) Incognito was one of the first people to express support for Michael Sam.

Incognito was one of a number of athletes, executives and reporters to commend Sam for his courage after he decided to come out as gay.

Richie Incognito seemed genuinely blindsided by Jonathan Martin situation

Jonathan Martin Richie Incognito

Over 1,000 text messages that were exchanged between Miami Dolphins offensive linemen Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito from October 2012 to November 2013 were published by The Big Lead on Monday. I have combed through all of them, and the impression I get is that there is an entire side to the story that still needs to be told.

Incognito obviously likes to party. We have seen video proof that shows he acts like a jackass sometimes, but that doesn’t mean his relationship with Martin could not have been misunderstood. The text messages make it obvious that Martin is not a party animal. Incognito frequently asked him to go out to clubs. There were times when Martin would agree to meet up, but a lot of others when he made excuses like being too tired or already having plans to hang out with his parents.

Richie Incognito goes on the offensive, claims Jonathan Martin sent him vulgar texts

Jonathan Martin Richie Incognito

Richie Incognito is still in the process of defending himself against bullying accusations from former Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin. Believe it or not, text messages that were sent between the two may actually help Incognito make his case.

Incognito recently hired high-profile public relations firm Strick & Co. to help him refute allegations made by Martin. His lawyers have also turned over information to the NFL that they believe shows Martin is a troubled person who sent vulgar and inappropriate texts to Incognito.

Joe Philbin reportedly wanted to cut Richie Incognito after golf tournament incident

Richie IncognitoRichie Incognito has caused headaches for the Miami Dolphins in more ways than just his alleged harassment of teammate Jonathan Martin. Incognito is outspoken and has a history of getting himself into trouble both on and off the field. In 2012, he was accused of sexually harassing a female volunteer at a team golf tournament. According to a new report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, head coach Joe Philbin wanted to cut Incognito after that incident.

Philbin, who was hired by the Dolphins in January 2012, had been on the job for just a few months at the time Incognito was accused. He reportedly made it known to the organization that he believed it would be in the team’s best interest to move on from Incognito, but Philbin was overruled. Incognito wound up paying roughly $30,000 to settle the issue and ultimately remained with the team.

Fast forward to the following offseason, when the Dolphins supposedly once again contemplated releasing their veteran offensive lineman. Incognito, who has been said to have regularly held “mandatory” team meetings at strip clubs, avoiding being cut because the team decided it did not have enough depth at offensive line. I’m sure they would have done things differently in hindsight.

Incognito’s four-game suspension was set to conclude on Monday, but it has been extended with pay until the league concludes its investigation. The revelation that Philbin wanted to cut Incognito in 2012 could reflect poorly on the team, given the fact that they allegedly went against Philbin’s wishes with what was a seemingly solid judgment call.
