Richie Incognito broke his silence in a huge way on Wednesday, blasting Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin on Twitter and warning him that the truth is going to “bury” him. He later claimed that Martin once told him he was thinking about taking his own life.
“FACT: Jonathan Martin told me he thought about taking his own life in MAY 2013 (because) he wasn’t playing well,” Incognito wrote. “Told me he felt worthless.”
A series of text messages that were exchanged between Incognito and Martin appeared to show that the two had a pretty typical relationship for two men. Incognito’s camp has also claimed that Martin used drugs and that he feared he was in danger of losing his spot on the team.
In an interview with Tony Dungy last month, Martin said he felt that he had been “singled out” and the way he was treated was not normal. Incognito seems intent on proving that Martin had some mental health issues that were not caused by the way the former Stanford star was treated in the locker room.
Incognito’s claim that Martin told him he was considering suicide is obviously very serious. Had anyone else on the team known that Martin was having those thoughts and done nothing about it, there would be a significant problem within the organization.
