Tim Howard impressed himself with saves against Belgium

Tim Howard diveTim Howard had a record-tying performance when he made 16 saves in one game against Belgium at the World Cup. Even though the US lost the game, Howard became an American legend for his performance. He even had a great “Things Tim Howard could save meme” created in his honor and it was hilarious.

Now Howard admits he even impressed himself with some of the saves. Howard did an interview on “SportsCenter” Wednesday and was asked by Jay Harris to name his favorite saves. Though Howard didn’t have one particular save that stood out, he did mention the Belgium game.

“I think most recently there were a few from the Belgium game that I was impressed with myself,” said Howard.

Howard said he was in the zone during the game and not really focused on the meter ticking after each save.

“When you’re in the moment I don’t think you have the luxury of counting them up and hoping you get a whole bunch more. It’s quite the opposite. You’re trying to plug the holes and lead from the back.

“Obviously that’s my job to make saves and it’s hard to remember how many saves you made in a game or anticipate. So just trying to be in rhythm and make myself big and do the things I’m called upon to do. At the end of the day they add up, just wish I could have had one more,” said Howard.

I’m glad Howard admitted he even impressed himself with some of those saves. He was so awesome that game, it would have been impossible not to.

Tim Howard wants to know if Knicks have cap space for him

Tim Howard diveLooking ahead to 2015, the New York Knicks will have a considerable amount of salary cap space available thanks in part to the contracts of Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani expiring next year.

Unfortunately, at the moment there isn’t much wiggle room for Phil Jackson to work with in terms of adding worthwhile pieces for the upcoming season.

Not that Jackson was necessarily looking in his direction, but U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard seems interested in taking up a piece of that available cap space, according to this tweet he posted on Thursday.

Based on his heroics in the recent World Cup, Howard’s value likely will never be higher so it may take a max deal to bring the 35-year-old on board, which means Phil Jackson has a while to ponder the possible addition. Given the loss of Tyson Chandler, the Knicks will need defensive help. If Howard can protect the Knicks’ basket like he did the United States’ goal, it might be worth it.

Just a thought.

Tim Howard yearbook quote is so appropriate

Imagine how popular Tim Howard would be if the US defeated Belgium on Tuesday. Despite a heartbreaking loss that eliminated Team USA from the World Cup, Howard’s amazing 16-save performance is all people can talk about. His high school yearbook quote only adds to the discussion.

A Reddit user whose Reddit name can’t be repeated on here dug up Howard’s yearbook, in which he chose “It will take a nation of millions to hold me back” as his quote. Commenters quickly pointed out that Howard likes Public Enemy, and the hip hop group’s second album was entitled “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.”

Still, the quote could not be more appropriate. Howard was one man standing against an entire nation throughout most of Tuesday’s match. Had it not been for his record-setting performance, the US would have been embarrassed.

Tim Howard was drug tested after 16-save performance

Tim Howard diveTim Howard put together one of the greatest ever performances from a goalkeeper in a World Cup match on Tuesday. The 34-year-old tied a World Cup record with 16 saves and shattered the previous US mark of nine. Can any drug test really be random after a game like that?

During an interview with “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on Wednesday, Howard was asked what the conversations were like in the locker room after his team’s loss to Belgium. He said he didn’t get to hear all of them since he was being drug tested.

“I got dragged into drug-testing – again — randomly, so I didn’t hear all of them,” he said, via The Big Lead. “I think once I got back into the room it was quiet. Like you said, it was somber. No words can make you feel better. Some guys had tears. Some guys kept sitting quietly. It’s tough.”

Mike Golic then joked that the 10th or 11th save probably takes the “randomness” out of the drug testing.

“Someone else said that as well,” Howard admitted. “Maybe.”

Plenty of players are tested for performance-enhancing drug use throughout the World Cup, so it was probably a coincidence. People thought it was suspicious when FIFA tested seven Costa Rican players after their upset win over Italy, too. We wouldn’t exactly be shocked if unusually good performances factor into the decision making process.

Tim Howard was briefly the U.S. Secretary of Defense, according to Wikipedia

Tim Howard diveThe World Cup run of the United States came to an end on Tuesday at the hands of Belgium, who was victorious by 2-1 final score.

Speaking of hands, it was those of U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard that kept the team in the match with a performance those who were watching will not soon forget. Howard recorded a pretty ridiculous 16 saves, many of which were straight out of the top drawer.

Howard’s display was the talk of social media during the game and even prompted a brief change to the Wikipedia page for the United States Secretary of Defense, as shared by Grantland’s Danielle Elliot.

For reasons like this, the internet is great.

Had the U.S. been able to defeat Belgium, a public office may not have been out of the question for Tim Howard.
