The Houston Astros were clear favorites in their American League Wild Card series against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers swept them out of the postseason in just two games, however, and broke another remarkable streak in the process.

Houston’s loss means they will not make the ALCS for the first time since 2016, but the way the Tigers pulled off the feat is even more unlikely. The Astros had won 47 consecutive postseason games when leading after seven innings, a position they found themselves in during Wednesday’s Game 2. Houston fell behind in the 6th, but rallied for two runs in the 7th to go ahead 2-1.

In the 8th, however, the Tigers staged a dramatic rally. They went on to win 5-2, bringing that 47-game win streak to a stunning end.

The Astros have been in World Series-or-bust mode for the better part of the last decade. Not only is that not happening this year, but they are facing some significant uncertainty this offseason.
