Kyle Tucker could be set up through the mid-2030s if he accepts the offer the Toronto Blue Jays are giving him.
Toronto is willing to potentially go to a 10-year-offer for the free agent outfielder Tucker, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Wednesday during an appearance on “SportsNet Central.” Passan adds that the Blue Jays are currently the only team willing to go to that extent in order to sign Tucker.
There is plenty of precedent in Major League Baseball for 10-plus year contracts being given out to younger players (notably, Toronto just handed out a 14-year extension to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. this past April). But those types of contracts are largely unheard-of for a player as old as Tucker is already (he turns 29 later this week).
The four-time All-Star Tucker is also drawing interest from the New York Mets, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the New York Yankees. Earlier this week, we learned that the Mets have offered Tucker a contract with a ridiculous average annual value but over a much shorter timeframe.
But the Blue Jays have seemingly been the most aggressive team for Tucker all winter. Reports earlier this month claimed that Toronto has offered Tucker the single biggest contract thus far.
Now we know that the sheer number of years on the Blue Jays’ offer to Tucker is part of why the monetary value is so large. Tucker will thus have to decide if he wants long-term security through his late-30s or more money up front with a chance to re-enter free agency within a few years for an even bigger payday.
