Bryce Harper stayed classy in defeat Tuesday as Team USA once again watched a rival nation take gold at the World Baseball Classic.
Harper could have been the hero for Team USA with his game-tying home run with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning. But Venezuela countered with a go-ahead run in the next half-inning to seal a 3-2 win on American soil at loanDepot Park in Miami, Fla.
Once Team USA’s losing result was final, Harper went back onto the field and congratulated every member of Team Venezuela that he could.

Harper was asked about his wholesome gesture during his postgame press conference.
“I want to win gold, just like anybody else,” Harper told reporters. “But at the end of the night, man, they did it. They won. I mean, all, you know, all the congratulations to them and what they did, and they fought hard, they played a great game. I mean, I got nobody, nothing but respect for them.”
Harper could have justifiably sulked after watching what would have been a career-defining moment of his lose its shine in a matter of minutes. Instead, he extended a congratulatory hand to his opponents for winning their first World Baseball Classic championship.
