The San Francisco Giants have ruled out one popular candidate for their open managerial position.
Giants president Buster Posey said Wednesday that Bruce Bochy will not be a candidate for the team’s manager job, via Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. Posey said Bochy is always welcome back to the organization in some capacity, but that the team wants to go in a different direction with their manager hire.
Speculation grew quickly that Bochy might be in line to return to the Giants after he and the Texas Rangers mutually agreed to part ways. The 70-year-old managed the Giants to three World Series titles during his previous stint in charge.
It is unclear why the Giants do not want to take a look at Bochy. It is possible that the team would prefer to find a more long-term solution in the role, as Bochy is unlikely to be that. He is more a short-term fix for an organization that is close to contention, and that might not necessarily be the Giants.
The Giants did go 81-81 in 2025 and remained on the fringes of the playoff race until late in the season. They probably need more than just a new manager to propel themselves into the top tier of championship contenders.
