California congressman loses bet, sings ‘Meet the Mets’ on House floor (Video)
It’s a regular occurrence that when two teams meet in a playoff series, particularly a final, the mayors of each city make some sort of friendly bet on the outcome. This practice has spread to Congress, where Rep. Steve Israel of New York and Rep. Adam Schiff of California made a bet as to who would win the NLDS between the Mets and Dodgers.
The Mets won in five, thanks in large part to Daniel Murphy, which meant Schiff lost the bet. On Friday, he paid up by pasting a Mets logo on his tie and singing “Meet the Mets” on the floor of the House of Representatives.
There’s a lot to like here. There’s the terrible singing, for one. There’s also the fact that Congressman Schiff sounds like he’d rather be anywhere else, particularly the pained tone toward the end. Lastly, there’s the fact that he can’t resist taking a shot at the other team from New York, saying he’s relieved that it’s the Mets who are going to the World Series and not the Yankees. Well done, sir.
