While Hicks and the Cardinals have yet to make a determination on how the UCL issue will be treated, this sort of injury typically requires Tommy John surgery.
Hicks made a name for himself as one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the sport. According to Fangraphs, Hicks averaged 101.2 MPH on his fastball so far in 2019, and his fastball has registered as high as 104 MPH on the radar gun.
Hicks had a 3.14 ERA in 29 appearances in 2019. He had issued 11 walks while striking out 31 in 28.2 innings of action, and had collected 14 saves after emerging as the Cardinal closer.
