Matt Wieters will have to prove his way onto a Major League roster this spring.
Wieters is signing a minor league deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, as first reported by Rob Rains.
Wieters played in just 76 games last season, his second with the Washington Nationals. He batted .238 with a .704 OPS.
At one point viewed as a premier catching prospect, Wieters never quite developed the way the Baltimore Orioles had hoped when they took him fifth overall in 2007. The 32-year-old is a career .251 hitter and hasn’t batted over .243 since 2015.
Yadier Molina is the team’s starting catcher, so Wieters would have to beat out Francisco Pena to make the roster.
