Carlos Correa has first beer after Astros’ Wild Card win: ‘It tastes bad’

Carlos Correa

Having just turned 21 on September 22nd and with his Astros defeating the Yankees in the AL Wild Card Game by the final of 3-0 to advance to the ALDS, it was the perfect storm for Houston shortstop extraordinaire Carlos Correa to kick back and celebrate a little. The Puerto Rican phenom, who had yet to anoint his taste buds with a sip of brew, decided to celebrate Tuesday’s victory by drinking his first beer. An experience of pure bliss and euphoria, much? Well, not quite.

“It tastes bad,” said Correa to Ben Reiter of Sports Illustrated after his first cold one.

Reiter had previously written a profile on Correa for SI late last month where the shortstop detailing his previous background (or lack thereof) with alcoholic beverages. “Never drank a beer before,” said Correa at the time, “I’ve had wine and champagne, but never a beer. I don’t think that will happen. I don’t know why people look forward to that.”

For all of Correa’s immense talents at just 21 years of age (ridiculous raw power, high contact rate, rocket arm at short, and physical gifts, to name a few), it’s good to know that being an alcohol enthusiast is not one of them for perhaps the best young shortstop Major League Baseball has seen since Seattle-era Alex Rodriguez.

Hey, maybe Correa can turn up with Harrison Barnes sometime soon!
