One of the San Diego Padres’ major trade deadline additions got hurt in a fluke dugout accident.
Starting pitcher Casey Mize had to leave Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins due to a sprained ankle he suffered walking into the dugout. Mize seemingly tripped over a step and came up limping afterward while leaving the field at the end of the second inning.

Mize did return to the mound for the third and got the first two outs, but was removed after giving up a double as he struggled to battle through the sprain.
Obviously, this was a freak accident, but the Padres had to be bemoaning their luck to see a key player get hurt this way. The good news is that Mize is considered day-to-day and should not face an extended absence. Plus, the Padres kept it together and went on to win Saturday’s game against Minnesota 7-5.
Dugouts can be quite hazardous, as plenty of others could reveal. This is not even the first time something like this has happened to a Major League pitcher.
