Cubs decide to DFA former World Series champion

The Chicago Cubs are doing some roster shuffling, specifically at the catcher position.

Chicago announced Wednesday that they have designated veteran backstop Yan Gomes for assignment. The Cubs are signing fellow catcher Tomas Nido, formerly of the New York Mets, in a corresponding move.

Gomes, 36, was an All-Star in 2018 with the then-Cleveland Indians and then went on to become the starting catcher on the Washington Nationals team that won the World Series in 2019. He also has a Silver Slugger Award in his trophy case, having won it in 2014 with Cleveland.

The righty-hitting Gomes had been with the Cubs since the 2022 season, but the bottom was really falling out on him this year. In 34 games for Chicago in 2024, Gomes was turning in a truly miserable slash line of .154/.179/.242. With Miguel Amaya seemingly locked in as the Cubs’ starting catcher and with Nido presenting an alternative who is slightly younger and more competent at the plate than Gomes, Chicago is moving on. Gomes now becomes the latest former All-Star that the Cubs have DFA’d this season.
