In the Marlins’ first game since the tragic passing of Jose Fernandez, Dee Gordon surely made his former teammate proud.
When Gordon came up to bat in the bottom of the first inning, he did so wearing the batting helmet that belonged to Fernandez and stood in the batter’s box designated for right-handed hitters for the first pitch as a tribute to the two-time All-Star. Gordon also did Fernandez’s customary leg kick.

Gordon was also wearing uniform No. 16, as did all of the Marlins. He then switched to his normal left side of the plate and hit his first home run of the season. Gordon was understandably emotional rounding the bases and was greeted by teammates upon reaching the dugout afterward.
Sometimes sports has ways of providing moments that words can do little to describe. We just witnessed one of those moments. R.I.P. Jose Fernandez.
