Kris Bryant truly may have already played his final inning of Major League Baseball.
Colorado Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta recently spoke with the press amid the end of the team’s 2026 season. During the media session, DePodesta shared another negative update about the status of the Rockies veteran third baseman Bryant.
“We have to continue to move forward from a roster-building standpoint as if we’re not going to have him,” said DePodesta of Bryant, per Kyle Newman of The Denver Post.
Bryant, the 34-year-old former NL MVP, signed a lucrative seven-year, $182 million contract with the Rockies before the 2022 season. But Bryant has since been an abject disaster in Colorado.
Lingering injuries have limited Bryant to just 170 total games over his five seasons with the Rockies. Even during the rare times that Bryant has been healthy, he has been an overall negative WAR player for Colorado, batting .244 with a .695 OPS.
Bryant last suited up for the Rockies in the 2025 season, appearing in a mere 11 games due to a degenerative disc condition in his back. Then in 2026, Bryant was unable to appear in even a single game for Colorado thanks to his ongoing condition (as the team went on to post the worst record in baseball at 58-104).
Unfortunately for the Rockies, Bryant is still owed $27 million in each of the next two seasons before his contract is up. A four-time All-Star and former World Series champion with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, Bryant shared the alarming symptoms of his condition last year and probably can be categorized at this point as a former player.
