If Tuesday’s American League Division Series rain delay threw off your schedule, you are not alone.
Tuesday’s ALDS Game 2 between the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers had been scheduled to start just after 4 p.m., but inclement weather in Detroit forced a lengthy delay. That meant FOX’s MLB pregame show had to fill a lot of time, and Derek Jeter’s schedule was an unfortunate victim.
Jeter’s phone went off while on the air Tuesday, and he had to pause to silence it. He awkwardly explained that one of his kids had a parent-teacher conference scheduled for Tuesday afternoon that he would no longer be making.
“Sorry. It’s a rain delay. I have a parent-teacher conference that I’m going to miss, so sorry, guys,” Jeter admitted.

David Ortiz encouraged Jeter to take the call on the air, but Jeter would not take the bait.
Perhaps the best part of this is the implication that Jeter had planned to do the pregame show, then presumably leave to attend the school conference and return to do the remainder of the show. Maybe that’s one reason why he does not actually want to do live analysis during games.
There are certainly constructive ways to make use of lengthy rain delays. Jeter probably knows a few of them, but whether he can engage in them while on television is another question.
