After only getting a few months with him the first time around, the Arizona Diamondbacks may be trying to run it back with a former slugger.
In an article Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post mentioned the Diamondbacks in connection with free agent designated hitter JD Martinez. Heyman notes that Arizona is seeking another bat (but adds that the New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels are also eyeing Martinez).
Though he is now 36 years old, Martinez was still on his A-game last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was one of the most productive hitters in the Dodgers lineup, batting .271 with 33 home runs and 133 RBIs over 113 games. Martinez was also selected to the sixth All-Star team of his career.
The righty hitter Martinez already had a brief stint with Arizona in 2017 when they acquired him via a midseason trade with the Detroit Tigers. He clubbed 29 homers in his short 62-game run with the Diamondbacks that year before leaving to sign with the Boston Red Sox in the winter.
Fresh off their NL pennant victory last season, Arizona is staying proactive this offseason. They made a big trade for an ex-All-Star infielder last month and could be upgrading at DH too by reuniting with Martinez.
