Unlike in 2023, Lady Luck was not on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ side this year.

The Dbacks were officially eliminated from postseason contention Monday with the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves splitting the two games of their doubleheader on the final day of the regular season. At 89-73 and not owning the tiebreaker over either the Mets or the Braves, the Dbacks needed either team to sweep the doubleheader in order to clinch a Wild Card spot.

When the Mets won the first game of the doubleheader on Monday in very wild fashion to secure their playoff berth, Arizona made no secret of how they were rooting for the Mets to take the next game as well (in order to punch the Dbacks’ own ticket to the postseason).

But the Mets quickly fell behind 1-0 in the second inning. That then became 2-0 and then 3-0 by the seventh inning. As a result, Arizona posted a series of progressively sadder emojis to their official X page (culminating with the saddest emoji that they could find when the game went final as a 3-0 victory for Atlanta).

Of course, the Dbacks, who made an improbable run to the World Series last season as a Wild Card team, should have taken care of their own business by winning enough games so that they would not have to rely on another team to get them into the playoffs. But that was just the way that it was for Arizona this season as they were often their own worst enemies.
