George Springer was furious after umpires screwed him on back-to-back botched calls

Blue Jays star George Springer with a look of disbelief

George Springer needed all his mental fortitude to keep himself from getting ejected during the Toronto Blue Jays’ game on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox.

Springer came up to bat in a big spot as his Blue Jays trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning in front of a packed crowd inside Rogers Centre in Toronto. He had the bases loaded with two outs against Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito.

With the count at 2-1, Springer appeared to give the crowd what they were praying for — a bases-clearing hit down the line in left field. However, third-base umpire Scott Barry ruled that the ball went foul.

Springer was irate at the call, which replays proved incorrect. To add insult to injury, Springer was called out on the next pitch on a ball that was well outside the plate. The Blue Jays slugger was ready to break his bat in anger, but somehow managed to gather himself to avoid getting ejected.

Neither the fair-or-foul call nor the blown strike call was reviewable. The early-inning sequence changed the game entirely, as Toronto mustered only one run in a 4-1 loss to Boston.

The game also had significant playoff implications as the Blue Jays entered Tuesday with a two-game lead over the New York Yankees for the AL East crown. The Blue Jays, who hold the tiebreaker over the Yankees, saw their division lead shrink to one as New York won its Tuesday contest over the Chicago White Sox.
