George Springer commits dumbest baserunning mistake of season

George Springer jumping on third base

George Springer somehow managed to invent a completely new way to get tagged out on the bases.

The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Springer had perhaps the single biggest blunder of the MLB season so far. During Toronto’s game on Sunday against the Athletics at Rogers Centre in Toronto, O.N., Springer was on first base in the fifth inning with two outs and the Blue Jays trailing 3-1.

Blue Jays teammate Alejandro Kirk ripped a double into left field, scoring lead runner Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (who was on second base). But Springer managed to get thrown out at third base in a completely absurd manner.

Springer made it into the bag standing up and well before the throw … but was hopping up and down on the base with his back turned to the ball.

Athletics third baseman Max Schuemann then alertly decided to place the tag on an airborne Springer. Though the third-base umpire initially ruled Springer to be safe, the Athletics challenged the call, and Springer was called out to end the inning (as Schuemann’s tag actually got him while he was completely off the bag).

Here is the unbelievable video.

They say to never make the first or the third out of the inning at third base. But through his own absent-mindedness, Springer managed to do just that … in an absolutely ridiculous and revolutionary new way.

Springer got lucky though as the Blue Jays ended up scoring six runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the game over the Athletics by an 8-4 final. But this continues on a long history of the four-time All-Star Springer displaying poor fundamentals (even dating back to his time with the Houston Astros).
