Giancarlo Stanton planning to return before end of regular season

Giancarlo Stanton

It looks like whoever ruled out Giancarlo Stanton for the remainder of the season forgot to tell Giancarlo Stanton.

Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said on Sunday that Stanton is planning to return before the end of the regular season.

“He’s going to be back,” Hill said, per Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. “He’s told me he’s going to be back. He’s going to help this team get into October and help us get through October.”

Stanton, 26, suffered a Grade 3 left groin strain on the basepaths on August 13 and was originally ruled out for the year. But, as Frisaro also notes, the Marlins said that the best-case timetable for Stanton’s recovery is six weeks, which would put his return during the final week of the regular season.

At the moment, the Marlins are 65-59, sitting 8.5 games behind the Washington Nationals for the NL East division lead. But they are currently within striking distance of the second Wild Card spot in the National League at only 1.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals.

With just under 40 regular season games left to play, how bright or bleak the Marlins’ playoff hopes look over the next several weeks will probably determine how they proceed with their All-Star slugger.
