Report: Giants sign Jeff Samardzija to five year deal

Jeff Samardzija

The San Francisco Giants moved to address their pitching by agreeing to terms with Jeff Samardzija to a five year, $90 million contract on Saturday, according to multiple reports.

CSN Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic originally reported the deal, while Yahoo’s Tim Brown reported the financial figures.

Samardzija struggled mightily for the Chicago White Sox last season with an ERA just under 5, but had been a successful pitcher up to that point with the Cubs and Athletics. The Giants are clearly betting that Samardzija’s 2015 was a fluke, and there’s reason to believe that it was, as Samardzija is a fly ball pitcher who will be going from a very small park to one of the biggest.

The Giants had been targeting Zack Greinke and were considered one of the frontrunners for his services, but after he surprised everyone by signing with Arizona, San Francisco moved quickly to secure their plan B.
