Greg Holland got to ballpark late after birth of son, got the save anyway

Greg-Holland-babyAll of the Kansas City Royals players and coaches have had a long week, but closer Greg Holland has been a bit more busy than the rest. On Wednesday, Holland’s wife, Lacey, gave birth in North Carolina to the couple’s first child. Considering the Royals had a wild-card game in Kansas City on Tuesday (that went 12 innings) and Game 1 of the ALDS in Anaheim on Thursday, you can understand how hectic Holland’s week must have been.

But the superdad managed to do it all. Holland got to North Carolina in time to witness the birth of little Nash on Wednesday and arrived at the ballpark on Thursday in time to close out the Royals’ 3-2 win over the Angels in 11 innings. Because of traffic, Holland did not arrive at the stadium until the fourth inning, but he was there when the team needed him most.

The baby’s due date was on Oct. 4, and Holland joked earlier this season that he hoped his child would be a “playoff baby” and come into the world on an off-day. With the help of induced labor, he got his wish.

Of course, being late to a game because your son is being born is one of the best excuses you can have. Don’t get any crazy ideas, Yasiel Puig.
