The Texas Rangers may be replacing Bruce Bochy with a figure who has some managing experience of his own.
Texas announced on Monday that they are mutually parting ways with their manager Bochy. The ex-NL Manager of the Year Bochy had led the Rangers for the last three seasons, including during their 2023 World Series victory.
In the wake of the news, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reported that a “heavy, heavy” favorite has now emerged to succeed Bochy as Texas’ manager — Skip Schumaker.
Schumaker, who spent the 2025 campaign as a senior advisor for the Rangers, played in Major League Baseball for 11 seasons from 2005-15. He then went into coaching at the big-league level, eventually becoming the manager of the Miami Marlins.
The 45-year-old Schumaker went 146-178 (.451) over his two seasons in charge of Miami from 2023-24. But that did include a surprise playoff berth in 2023, during which Schumaker was also named NL Manager of the Year.
Schumaker parted with the Marlins after the 2024 season amid a series of personal and professional challenges. He then joined the front office of the Rangers as the senior advisor to president of baseball operations Chris Young, Schumaker’s former MLB contemporary.
Ever since winning the World Series, Texas has yet to earn a playoff berth or even produce a single winning season. By replacing the 70-year-old Bochy with the much-younger Schumaker, the Rangers would be creating a major culture shift in the hopes of being able to get back to their winning ways.
