Jered Weaver and Kyle Seager took their beef from the field to print on Thursday, a day after Weaver was tossed for hitting the Mariners third baseman with a pitch.
Weaver hit Seager with a pitch after getting upset with the Seattle infielder for calling timeout while in the box during the fifth inning of Wednesday’s 3-1 victory for the Mariners. Weaver was immediately ejected from the game, and he had words with Seager as he left the field.
On Thursday, Seager accused Weaver of quitting on his team.
“I was surprised he hit me because if he hits me there, it’s pretty obvious what’s going to happen. He’s going to be out of the game. … I guess he was tired of pitching. He quit on his team,” Seager said via the Tacoma News Tribune.
Weaver responded by trying to dismiss his opponent.
“I don’t even know who this kid is,” Weaver said.
Weaver really is just frustrated about the way his season has gone. As he said, his control isn’t as good as he’s hit 11 batters this year. His fastball velocity barely registers higher than that of a good high schooler. When things aren’t going your way, frustration tends to boil over. There’s little doubt that’s what’s going on with Weaver. He’s even taken his anger out on teammates this year, so Seager should not feel alone.
