Jon Lester, David Ross had an ‘I love you, man’ moment

Jon Lester David Ross

Jon Lester and David Ross had an “I love you, man” moment before Game 5 of the World Series at Wrigley Field on Sunday night.

In a moment straight out of “For the love of the game,” Lester and his personal catcher, Ross, were walking from the bullpen prior to the do-or-die game against the Indians, when they got sentimental with each other. The Cubs pitcher shared with FOX’s Ken Rosenthal how the conversation went with him and his catcher.

“Usually he gives me a little pep talk down the line there to the dugout,” Lester said of Ross, “and tonight was really special and something I’ll always remember until I’m done in this game. He looked at me and he said, ‘I love you, man.’ And I said, ‘I love you too, man. Let’s do this again, why not one more time?’ He said, ‘why not?’

“That kind of eased both of our nerves. We went out and competed like we normally do, and it was fun.”

That’s exactly how the conversation went between Billy Chapel and Gus Sinski went, if I’m not mistaken.

The conversation between them had extra emotion because Ross is retiring after the season, and the Cubs were facing a season-ending game. In fact, they only have a maximum of two games remaining in their season. Now the Cubs have to go to Cleveland to try and win two in a row, which won’t be easy as they face Josh Tomlin and Corey Kluber.
