Juan Soto falls victim to stunning All-Star snub

New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto may be the most egregious All-Star snub of the year, and it happened in interesting fashion.

Soto was not among the players named to the National League All-Star team on Sunday when reserves were announced. Soto failed to beat out Kyle Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Ronald Acuna Jr. for the three starting spots, but was also overlooked in the player vote.

Former teammate Fernando Tatis Jr. landed one of the three nods, as did Arizona’s Corbin Carroll. Nationals outfielder James Wood, for whom Soto was once traded, nabbed the other spot.

Player all-star voting results. Always interesting.

Why is Juan Soto not an all-star, for example? Wasn't voted onto the team by either the players or the fans. pic.twitter.com/1g418s29ao

Statistically, Soto has outperformed both Tatis and Carroll this year. He has the highest WAR, OPS, and home run total among the three players.

By the way….. Both Corbin Carroll AND Fernando Tatis Jr made it over Juan Soto.

This isn’t a “the Padres and Diamondbacks only selection” pick since both teams have starters… Instead, it’s an outlandish snub.

Soto could still make it to Atlanta if one of the six NL outfielders drops out, but him missing the game is a surprise. There is even more intrigue behind the fact that he was mostly snubbed by his own peers. One has to wonder if perceptions about his slow start, plus some other negative publicity, hurt Soto in this regard.

Soto was just named National League Player of the Month for June and has 21 home runs in 89 games. There will probably be numerous All-Star appearances in his Mets future, but perhaps not this year.
