Keith Hernandez makes $3,000 a year in ‘Seinfeld’ royalties

Jerry Seinfeld Keith HernandezKeith Hernandez transformed from ex-MLB player to pop culture legend when he appeared on popular sitcom “Seinfeld” for a few episodes.

The former New York Mets first baseman appeared in two episodes of the show in 1992 as the love interest of Elaine Benes. He also appeared in the show’s finale in 1998.

Thanks to its status as one of the best shows in TV history, Seinfeld still airs multiple times daily in syndication, which means those who appeared on the show are still cashing in on royalties.

In an interview with NJ.com, Hernandez, who was a five-time All-Star and won the 1979 NL MVP, says he still pulls in about $3,000 a year in royalties.

How often do the checks come?
Every time they show it. I get around — I’m going to say they show my episode a lot. So I’m going to say I get a check every month. Nothing less than six weeks. They show it all the time. It’s international and everything.

What do you make per episode, if you don’t mind me asking?
It used to be almost $1,000. It diminishes as the years go by. So it gives me around $3,000 per year. I’ll take it. For doing nothing. So you can imagine what Jerry gets. The principal actors, what they get.

That’s money well-earned for Hernandez! At least it should be enough to buy packs of cigarettes and hire movers whenever he needs them.

When he’s not cashing in on his Seinfeld royalties, Hernandez serves as a broadcaster for the Mets. He’s been known for falling asleep on the job and ripping on Alex Rodriguez.
