The fan who was ejected from a Chicago White Sox game for making a comment about Ketel Marte’s late mother has received a severe punishment.
The 22-year-old fan accused of making the remark has been banned indefinitely from all 30 MLB stadiums, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. The White Sox quickly removed the fan from Rate Field in Chicago, Il. after the incident.
The fan is said to have admitted to making inappropriate comments and was “remorseful” for his actions.
It is unknown precisely what the fan said to Marte during the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game. It is known, however, that the fan made a remark about Marte’s mother, who died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. The comment had a serious impact on Marte, who was in tears on the field during a subsequent pitching change.
This is at least the second time this season that a fan has gone too far in making a personal remark about a player. The consequences for this one were very swift.
Marte is one of Arizona’s top players, hitting .320 with 15 home runs on the season. He had two hits and a home run on Tuesday night in an eventual 4-1 Diamondbacks victory.
