The Cleveland Guardians have issued an apology for the situation on Sunday that led to Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran having a heated confrontation with a fan.
Duran became furious with a heckling fan during the 7th inning of Boston’s 13-3 win over the Guardians at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. He needed to be restrained from going after the fan, who said something after Duran flew out that set Duran off. Umpires stepped in and the situation did not escalate. You can see the video here.
Jahmai Webster said on the NESN television broadcast that the fan “said something that crossed the line.” Red Sox TV analyst Will Middlebrooks revealed that the fan told Durran something like “you should have killed yourself when you had the chance.”
Following the game, the Guardians issued a statement vowing to address the incident.
“We are aware of the situation that took place during today’s game between a fan and one of the Red Sox players that violated our fan conduct policy. We recognize the gravity of the behavior at issue here and take very seriously conduct of this nature,” the statement read. “We apologize to the Red Sox organization, the player involved, fans in the area and are addressing the situation. We have identified the fan in question and will work with Major League Baseball regarding next steps. We strive to provide the best experience to visiting players and fans, and that fell short today.”

In a Netflix series that aired earlier this month, Duran revealed that he attempted to commit suicide in 2022. That is why he became so angry over the alleged comment on Sunday.
Duran has gotten himself into trouble by responding to hecklers in the past, but in this instance it seems the Guardians believe the fan was at fault.
The 28-year-old Duran is in his fifth MLB season with the Red Sox. He has batted .276 through 29 games this year.
