Nothing found the mark for the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 of the ALCS … not even their loogies.
The Blue Jays lost on Friday night to the Seattle Mariners by a final score of 6-2. They only managed solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings and can now be eliminated with another loss in Game 6 on Sunday.
Making matters even worse for Toronto was a disgusting moment that was caught on the national television broadcast involving pitcher Kevin Gausman, who drew the start for the Blue Jays. During the sixth inning at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Wash., Gausman was pulled for reliever Louis Varland.
While Varland was facing his first batter, the broadcast cut to Gausman, who was now watching from the top step of the dugout. As Gausman was on camera, he proceeded to spit … and promptly missed the target.
Gausman ended up with spit all over his arm as a result, which he proceeded to quickly wipe off. You can view the video at the link here.
The two-time All-Star Gausman actually did fine during Friday’s game, going 5.2 innings and allowing just one run while striking out four. But while he had solid control of his fastball and his splitter, Gausman didn’t quite have the same control of his saliva.
These kinds of sights are unfortunately all too common during baseball games though, especially coming from the dugout. That was probably even worse than what Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman did in the dugout a couple of months ago.
