Manny Machado got heated with a reporter after season-ending loss

The San Diego Padres were mad at the world after their season came to an end on Thursday night.

San Diego lost Game 3 of their NL Wild Card series to the Chicago Cubs by a final score of 3-1, eliminating them from postseason contention. The game also ended in particularly frustrating fashion for the Padres after home plate umpire DJ Reyburn made a highly controversial strike-3 call in the ninth inning at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Ill. to effectively stamp out San Diego’s hopes of a rally (see the video here).

After the game, Padres star infielder Manny Machado was speaking with reporters gathered at his locker. The final question of the session came from Jake Garegnani of CBS 8 San Diego, who asked Machado how he would assess the season.

“What kind of question is that, my guy?” a clearly irritated Machado responded. “How do I assess the season? We just lost. How do you think I assess it? … What’s a loss? We lost. How do you assess it? It’s a loss. We lost.

“Come on dude,” Machado added. “You can ask better questions than that. Let’s go. Come on.”

Even after adjourning the media scrum, Machado continued to go at Garegnani, saying, “You’re gonna wait til the last second to ask that question? Come on, bro.” Here is the video.

That seemed like somewhat of a fair question from Garegnani as the Padres did manage to win 90 games for just the sixth time in their franchise’s history before coupling that with a disappointing postseason flameout. But even Garegnani acknowledged that he was asking the question right after the season just ended, so it probably isn’t too surprising either that Machado wasn’t having it.

The Padres as a whole were also in an extremely foul mood following the season-ending loss, in large part because of the bad call behind the plate by Reyburn. Viral video from the stands showed San Diego players going nuts on the umpires as they were walking off the field.
