Marcell Ozuna was late to Cardinals’ game after oversleeping

Marcell Ozuna

Marcell Ozuna was scratched from the St Louis Cardinals’ lineup for the team’s game against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday after oversleeping.

According to the St Louis Post-Dispatch, Ozuna was not at the stadium before the game, causing concern within the team. The Cardinals actually sent someone to Ozuna’s apartment to make sure he was OK, and they found him sleeping. He was awakened and then came to Busch Stadium, albeit late.

“(I) came to the park and said sorry to my teammates, to my coach,” Ozuna said, via the Post-Dispatch. “Everybody can make a mistake. We are human.”

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny took it easy on Ozuna, saying he made a mistake and was contrite. And even though the outfielder did not play in the game, he was ready to pinch-hit in the ninth inning.

Ozuna is in his first year with the Cardinals. The 27-year-old is batting a disappointing .253 with just three home runs. He also overslept once when he was with the Marlins.
