The Seattle Mariners are making a trade to acquire some more firepower as they attempt to build on their successes in 2025.
The Mariners are acquiring infielder Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals, according to multiple reports. The Tampa Bay Rays are also involved as a third team to help facilitate the deal.
Seattle gets a versatile infielder very late in the offseason. Donovan won a Gold Glove as a rookie in 2022, and received his first All-Star nod last season. He can play in both the infield and outfield, though the Cardinals used him primarily as a second baseman last year. The Mariners could use him as either a second baseman or a third baseman.
The Cardinals continue to tear everything down and start over this offseason. They already parted ways with Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray, among others, and look poised to enter a full-scale rebuild. They finished 78-84 last season in spite of a core of players that included Arenado, Donovan, and Gray.
Donovan has been the subject of trade rumors for much of the offseason. The lefty hit .287 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs in 2025.
