Look: Marlins draw another insanely small crowd for day game

The Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays are in a battle to see who can draw the most pathetic crowds, and the Marlins appear to have reclaimed the lead after the Rays tried to deliver a knockout blow earlier in the week.

While the official attendance numbers are not yet available, the crowd at Thursday’s matinee game between the Marlins and San Francisco Giants in Miami looked like something you would see at a high school sports event — a lousy one.

Unfortunately, that has been a common theme for the 2019 Marlins. They currently rank dead last in baseball in average home attendance by a wide margin, as they were drawing an average of 9,554 fans per game heading into Thursday. We can expect those numbers to drop even further.

The Rays set a new record low for attendance earlier in the week, and the showing was so bad that the team even felt the need to issue a statement about it. That may be even more disturbing for the Rays, as they are actually a playoff contender. The Marlins stink, as usual, so you can’t blame fans for not wanting to pay to see them play.
